"Learn To Paramotor" are a Paramotoring School based from sites near Redhill and Guildford in Surrey. Paramotor courses are run all year round, 7 days a week and can be tailored to fit your situation (Including outside of work hours etc).
Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) Steve Haze has been independently examined by Paramotor Club Panel Examiners and the school follows the Paramotor Club Syllabus using the Paramotor Club Operations Manual (PCOM) . The PCOM has been produced specifically for Paramotoring by a team of the country's most experienced pilots to take you from Ground-Handling the wing, through your first flights and onwards to becoming a confident and competent pilot in a safe, fun and professional learning environment. We use top of the range equipment which is provided free to use for the duration of the course. Then, at the end of the course, when you are ready to get your own equipment we can assist you in making the best choices to ensure that you are all ready to take to the skies as a Pilot!! ABOUT STEVE: Steve Haze (whose youthful face allows him to the ability to never age) first learnt to fly a Hang Glider at the age of 17 after countless dreams of flying left him with an urge to take to the skies. But although an amazing feeling, Hang Gliding felt very limited as there were few hills nearby where he could fly and the window of opportunity for flying is smaller than that of a Paramotor. This accessibility drew him to Paramotoring and after learning to fly Steve realised he had found the one thing in life that he had been looking for. Now 30 years old, Paramotoring has become not only his hobby, but his life, career and obsession. If it's flyable he's either out in the field instructing, or in the air playing around in the wind and soaring into the blue yonder. In 2010 Steve successfully passed the rigorous testing of the Paramotor Club Instructors Course as a QFI and set to work passing on the joy that he gets every time he straps himself in and takes to the air. SO WHAT IS PARAMOTORING? Paramotoring (also known as Powered paragliding) is a form of ultralight aviation where the pilot wears a motor on his or her back (a paramotor) which provides enough thrust to take off using a paraglider wing. It can be launched in still air, and on level ground, by the pilot alone — no assistance is required. In many countries, including Britain, powered paragliding is minimally regulated and requires no license. The ability to fly both low and slow safely, the 'open' feel, the low equipment and maintenance costs, and the portability are claimed to be this type of flying's greatest merits. Powered paragliders usually fly between 15 and 45 mph (25 and 70 km/h) at altitudes from 'foot-dragging in the grass' up to 10,000 ft (3048 m) although most flying is done between 500 ft (15 0m) and 2000 ft (300 m) above ground level. The paramotor, weighing from 20 to 36 kg is supported by the pilot during takeoff but then, after a brief run the wing lifts the motor and its harnessed pilot off the ground. After takeoff, the pilot gets into the seat (previously folded for takeoff) and sits suspended beneath the inflated paraglider wing. Control is available using brake toggles in each hand and a hand-held throttle. COURSES: PPG 1 - 10 days - £800 - PPG-1: A 10 day course - Only £800 - At Learn To Paramotor, we follow the Paramotor Club Sylllabus which has been designed to give you a comprehensive knowledgebase for all the theory that is required to fly safely and legally and to give you all the practical experience you need to become a competent and confident pilot. We all have to start somewhere and learning any new skill can be daunting, but with a patient instructor and a clearly defined, structured course, we know we can get you up in the air on your first flight within 4 days!!! The 10 Day PPG-1 course has been designed with complete beginners in mind and begins with an introduction to the sport, the club and the equipment. Then after some brief discussions about and safety and the theory of how it all works, we begin what is known as "Ground Handling". Before we reach the stage where we are thinking about flying, we must first be able to control the wing. Ground Handling is a phrase describing the forward and reverse launch techniques and the control of the wing on the ground in various wind conditions. This control allows you to perfect an easy takeoff later on. Then, as you become proficient at the Ground Handling, we move on to short hops where we will push or hand-tow you along the ground or get you to run down a shallow hill with the wing above you. This allows you to get the taste of being in the air and allows you to understand the use of the controls of the wing in flight. These low hops are also an excellent way of perfecting your takeoff technique and of teaching you one of the most important aspects of Paramotoring; the landing! We then introduce you to our Paramotors (The Paramotor is the motor mounted on a harness on your back.) and at all times covering the safe handling of the unit. Then we put motor and wing together ready to go! FIRST FLIGHT AND ONWARDS!!! So....the big day arrives and it's time to get you up, up and away! We will talk you through every step of the process and guide you through your first steps into the air keeping in constant radio communication. You will never forget the first time you climb out from the airfield into the sky and look back down at the world below. We guarantee you will be smiling from ear to ear when you come back down. But that isn't the end of it... The PPG-1 course doesn't finish at first flight. We take you further on, completing a solo navigation task lasting no less than 1 and a half hours, teaching you spot landings and building experience. By this point, you will be a skilled pilot and comfortable in this new environment. At this point you might be looking to obtain your own equipment to carry on flying after the course has finished. We can help you to choose your equipment so that you are fully prepared to continue your new adventure. And then more...Once you have completed the course, you will be assigned a Paramotor Club Mentor who can continue to offer advice and assistance through your early days after leaving the nest. We also participate strongly in the local Paramotor Club branch and will often be happy to join you for a flight. So...what about the weather? What if it's raining? Paramotoring is for the most part a fair-weather activity. There is only so much we can do out in the field if it is too windy or if it rains. However, there is a fair bit of theory to cover and throughout the course and as we get closer to your First Flight and beyond, we will cover more theory of Air Law, Meteorology, Human Performance and Navigation. We also show you how to inspect and maintain your equipment, covering everything from untangling the lines on the wing to the basic servicing of your Paramotor unit. These are all requirements for passing the PPG-1 course and the knowledge you will gain will ensure that you know when to fly, where to fly and how to find your way back home. Luckily, all of this theory work can be carried out indoors and we will supply you with Tea, Coffee, Sandwiches and Cake whilst filling your head with information. We also promise to roll over any days that are ruined by bad weather. The 10 days are more of a guide than a set number and are used as a basic minimum rather than a limit. Your course does not finish until both we and you are happy that you can continue to fly unaided by an instructor. COURSES: PPG 2 This is charged at our daily rate of £80 On completion of the PPG1 course you are certified to fly from any PMC site and are deemed to be competent to fly solo. However, the first 20 hours of flying is recommended that you fly with a PMC Mentor or Instructor present. After you have have been flying for some time and have completed a minimum of 10 solo flying hours you can ask to be certified up to PPG 2 rating. The upgrade process is a short oral examination based around airmanship and emergency procedures to ensure that earlier training has remained embedded. Additionally, a flying test confirms that no significant bad habits have developed. This test will be based on the PPG 1 content and will typically contain exercises where you appear to need development or assistance. It may contain a ground handling element or a cross country task. The content is at the discretion of the instructor. On successful completion of the test, the PPG 2 Rating is awarded and supervisory recommendations are removed. For the PPG 2 rating it is also expected that the trainee will provide their own equipment as they would have most likely purchased this by this point. Should you require use of the school's equipment, this can be provided through our Equipment Hire Scheme (see main menu). The duration of this course is dependent on the skill of the trainee, who will in consultation with the Instructor agree a suitable timeframe. COURSES: Advanced This is charged at our daily rate of £80 As a paramotor school we know that there are elements of flying that can not be taught at the early stages. A lot of this is the "Fun Stuff" that comes when a pilot has really grown into their equipment and has been flying for some time (typically at least 40 hours or so). Often a pilot experiments on his own or in the company of friends where information is passed on about a trick or skill that they have heard of. Understandably, this can be the most dangerous time as the pilot pushes his limits and tries out sometimes daunting tasks unsupervised. Following the Paramotor Club's philosphy of "Safe, Fun and Professional" we believe that such experimentation in advanced skills is best carried out under the supervision of a skilled Instructor. Further to this We can offer training of skills such as Foot-Dragging, Kicking-Sticks and Spirals or any other areas where you wish to learn more. This bespoke training course will be designed by you and your Instructor and can last 1 day or several depending upon how much training you wish to undertake. There is no denying that Paramotoring is an expensive sport to start off with. The price of equipment can often be a barrier to those wanting to learn. At Learn To Paramotor we have a temporary solution. We offer Paramotor Club members the option to hire our school equipment at hourly rates from our take-off field. We can provide a beginners wing and paramotor combination or the wing and motor individually. Please note that if we do know know you, you will be expected to show proof of your Paramotor Club membership and if possible your signed-off Trainee Pilots Guide. If you are unable to do so, then some proof of your flying ability is essential. (or a referral from your instructor/organisation). We carry several paramotors in our arsenal. The powerful but heavy Parajet Macro with electric-start and the slightly lighter (pull-start) H&E R120. For the wings, we currently use Paramania for our school and currently use the Paramania GoFly school wing and a Paramania Revolution. The motors will come supplied with a reserve parachute, fuel and oil. We can also provide helmet, headset, radio and an altimeter. Prices start at £40 per hour, but with discounts for longer periods of time and for combinations. Please call Steve on 07968 345554 to discuss your needs.
